The first step is to turn it off and on again. If this does not work, you might wish to turn it off and leave it off. If you insist upon fixing this, first unscrew and peel back the control panel that hides your grudges. Turn grudge ‘A’ as far to the left as it will go without turning into love, then turn it farther. Lubricate tensions ‘A’ and ‘B’ (see diagram) in order to obtain maximum range of movement (to allow for later flexibility when reaching conclusions).

If you find that you cannot go on at this time, rest.

If you cannot rest, you must go on.

Return to the control panel. Check if anything is lodged in the insecurity gears. If so, remove carefully and gradually until the obstruction is gone. You may wish to wear gloves. You may wish to call someone and blame them, but it’s best to refrain from this urge.

At this point, you may find that the past has become increasingly hard to see. A magnifying glass will suffice for close inspection needs, but you may wish to fumble, as sometimes fumbling brings about accidental fixes. It is recommended that you look closely at any debris found in the insecurity gears.

If you are unable to resolve the issue yourself, another option is to discard or recycle the past. Check with your local facilities. In some cases, you may be able to sell your past, but be sure to remove all incriminating information before transferring ownership.

What if one of the most important street photographers of the 20th century was a 1950s children’s nanny who kept herself to herself and never showed a single one of her photographs to anyone?

Decades later in 2007, a Chicago real estate agent and historical hobbyist, John Maloof purchased a box of never-seen, never-developed film negatives of an unknown ‘amateur’ photographer for $380 at his local auction house.

John began developing his new collection of photographs, some 100,000 negatives in total, that had been abandoned in a storage locker in Chicago before they ended up at the auction house. It became clear these were no ordinary street snaps of 1950s & 60s Chicago and New York and so John embarked on a journey to find out who was behind the photographs and soon discovered her name: Vivien Maier.

Funny story about this poem and the title forget me not: it was originally untitled and somehow acquired the title ‘forget me not” as it floated around in cyber space, and it stuck, so now I call it that too :).

Things I wish someone had told me when I was a college freshman:

You will always believe you are more mature than you actually are.
But you are also not as stupid as you fear you are.
Do not let either of these things stop you from taking risks.
There is no magic age that makes you an adult. Adults can be childish and young people can be mature.
Everybody has shit to deal with. Keep this in mind when your shit threatens to overwhelm you.
Your flaws will never prevent you from being an excellent human being. Other people’s flaws won’t ever prevent them from also being excellent human beings.
Your professors are people. Not gods. People.
Taking care of yourself is not the same as being selfish. You are allowed to do things just because they make you happy.
Never let an “I love you” trap you in a relationship that is making you unhappy. You are allowed to leave a relationship and not feel guilty.
When you leave a party make sure you have everyone you came with. No roommate left behind.
Figure out what alcohol does to you and do your best to stop puking by the end of freshman year. The puking grace period ends real quick after that.
Learn how you best approach schoolwork and embrace it. Don’t feel bad if the way you study is different from your friends.
Try as hard as possible to ditch the high-school friendship rules. Meet as many people as you can.
You will hurt people, as much as you like to think you won’t. Apologize. Ask for forgiveness. Remember how this feels when people ask for your forgiveness. Give grace.
Your favorite experiences happen far outside your comfort zone.
